Valdes’ coast with its beaches, dunes, estuaries and shallow coastal cliffs, forms a unique window that opens this county to the sea. The mountain consists of many valleys and mountains ranges which dresses and oxygenates the Municipality of Valdés with the colours and the lushness of oaks, alders, ash, maples, laurels, strawberries, chestnuts, pines and birches. The countless rivers, streams and trails that criss-cross the country, contributing to refresh with its clean water the fertile lands of this county and to structure a landscape as picturesque as exceptional because of its quality, variety and uniqueness of its nature. This great biodiversity means that over 60% of the territory of Valdés is within one of the different forms of protection currently available.
The "Regional Network of Protected Natural Areas" includes large areas of this county, some of which are also included in the "Natura 2000", which includes sites of Community Importance, for their ecological significance; deserve a special interest in conservation of their habitats, consistent with sustainability criteria.
In this town find their ideal habitat, among other species of flora and fauna, some emblematic species such as otter, salmon, eel, shags, peregrine falcon, goshawk, kingfishers, deer, wolf and the hare.
The Partial Natural Reserve of Barayo, the Protected Landscapes of Esva basin and the West Coast, the Natural Monument of Las hoces del Esva, Busto Cape and the Negro River are some of the places which by virtue of their rich landscape and ecology, are essential parts of this large protected area in the council of Valdés.
The "Partial Natural Reserve of Barayo" is an iconic location for their outstanding natural and its well preserved places. The coastal habitats of beaches, dunes, estuaries and cliffs, are beautifully represented in this coastal area of Valdés. An integrated parking and an interpretation of nature area are located in the town of Sabugo-Otur and it constitute the starting point for the visit, always on foot, in this protected area.
The entire coast of Valdés council is included within the "protected landscape of the West Coast." The coastal plateau is fragmented by numerous rivers and streams, the magnificent cliffs, with well preserved vegetation and the numerous natural beaches and coves, are the dominant element in this protected area, where still live protected species like the cormorant and peregrine falcon. Busto cape is precisely an excellent example of the natural values of the coast of Valdés.
The "Protected Landscape of the Esva Basin was divided by rivers Esva, Llorín, Mallene and Muñas, where the otter and the salmon find their ideal habitat. The natural monument of Las hoces del Esva among Brieves and Paredes, and the upper basin of Llorín River, between The Castañedo and Pontigón represent the clearest examples of the lush greenery of the forests that carpet the hills of southern council .. The alder that company the Esva River from Trevías to its mouth at Cueva are other natural elements that define this protected area.
