Portizuelo Beach

Playa de Portizuelo

Portizuelo is a stony beach of boulders, great beauty and interest for its picturesque landscape, which is nestled within the protected countryside of the West Coast.
It was the favorite ride for the Nobel Prize Severo Ochoa and was a meeting point of the Maruyas, village women who swam dressed.

Access

The beach has two accesses. One of them from the village of Villar, by a very hilly path down to the fish farm  where we must leave the car to cross the creek on foot. The other access is from the town of Barcia, on a track with just a few slope that leads directly to the grass of the beach.

From the town of Villar, by an easy way to drive, you find the beach of Portizuelo. It is formed by quartzite and rocks of arbitrary shapes, where many artists have found in the Piedra del óleo (Stone of the oil) their inspiration. It was the meeting place of the "Maruyas" (women from the village who swam dressed). It also has road access from the town of Barcia. The Nobel Severo Ochoa ,from Luarca, spent  long time at this place.
